Payment tool giant PayPal studied cross-border consumers in 31 European countries, with a total of 34,000 consumers participating.

The PayPal study found that cross-border online shopping is the most common in Ireland and Austria, with only 16% and 18% of consumers buying only domestic products,consumers in Germany and Poland prefer to buy domestic products online, with 68% of Germans and 62% of Poles buying only domestic products.

Consumers in Western Europe and Eastern Europe tend to have very small differences in overall online buying

Overall, 43% of Western European consumers only online purchase of domestic products, while 48% of consumers both online purchase of domestic products and online purchase of foreign products, ,the remaining 9% consumers have only purchased overseas products in the past 12 months.
In eastern Europe, the picture is not much different: 44% of consumers buy only domestic products, 47% have both, and the remaining 10% have bought overseas products.

Most cross-border online shopping is done by computer

Most cross-border shopping consumption in Europe is done via computers (desktop, laptop), compared with 68% in Western Europe and 71% in eastern Europe.

In addition, 22% of Eastern European consumers cross-border purchases via smartphones, a figure of 20% in western Europe.

For European shoppers, the US and China remain the most popular cross-border shopping destinations, but the Western European market followed.
