Australia’s E-commerce platform is hot and eBay is still far ahead of Amazon

According to a new report released by PayPal on m-commerce in Australia, the number of people who use mobile devices for online shopping continues to grow, and E-commerce platforms are becoming increasingly popular with Shoppers.

According to the report, 89 percent of smartphone users use online shopping, and 49 percent buy online at least once a month.

In fact, when Australian shoppers have a shopping idea, the E-commerce platform (48%) becomes the preferred destination for their products, surpassing the search engine (43%) and the online retail store (29%).

Despite Amazon’s foray into the Australian market in December 2017, eBay is still the most popular platform for Australian consumers, with 79% of consumers saying they will be shopping on the eBay platform.

Australian companies are also aware of the power of e-commerce platforms, with 44 percent of them selling on the platform and 16 percent selling entirely through the platform. Paypal’s report says the key factors for consumers to use the platform for shopping are free shipping (61%), low prices (57%) and guaranteed purchases (51%) that include buyer guarantees and free Returns.

With the increase in the number of mobile purchases, the following platforms are starting to become popular:

Libby Roy, general manager of PayPal Australia, said: “as consumers become more and more dependent on technology, expectations for mobile experiences increase. Our research found that 47% of Australians were annoyed that a website could not be used smoothly on the mobile side, and 30% of mobile shoppers gave up shopping because of insufficient website mobile optimization, and 29% of shoppers abandoned shopping for security reasons. ”

One interesting aspect of the Australian online shopping experience is that eBay is more powerful than amazon.

This is due in large part to the fact that Amazon has built an Australian site quite Late. Amazon Australia officially started operations late last year, but eBay has been operating locally since 1999.

Another problem is that since July 1, 2018, Australia has started to levy goods and services tax (gst) on Low-value imports.

For this reason, the collection of eBay seller will not be affected, because eBay will automatically add the GST fee to the total order amount when the buyer checks out, while the seller will receive the order amount (commodity price + freight) as usual, and the GST part will be submitted by eBay to the Australian tax bureau (ATO).

Amazon has adopted a different strategy, and Amazon no longer sends overseas goods to Australian customers, which means that Australian consumers will not be able to buy goods from global sites outside of Amazon Australia.
